چکیده

While all but one Gamma–Ray Bursts observed in the X–ray band showed an X–ray afterglow, about 60 per cent of them have not been detected in the optical band. We show that this is not due to adverse observing conditions. We then investigate the hypothesis that the failure of detecting the optical afterglow is due to absorption at the source location. We find that this is a marginally viable interpretation, but only if the X–ray burst and afterglow emission and the possible optical/UV flash do not destroy the dust responsible for absorption in the optical band. If dust is efficiently destroyed, we are led to conclude that bursts with no detected optical afterglow are intrinsically different.

On the role of extinction in failed gamma–ray burst optical/IR afterglows

While all but one Gamma–Ray Bursts observed in the X–ray band showed an X–ray afterglow, about 60 per cent of them have not been detected in the optical band. We demonstrate that this is not due to adverse observing conditions, or delay in performing the observations. We also show that the optically non–detected afterglows are not affected by particularly large Galactic absorbing columns, since...

Taxonomy of GRB optical light-curves: identification of a salient class of early afterglows

The temporal behaviour of the early optical emission from Gamma-Ray Burst afterglows can be divided in four classes: fast-rising with an early peak, slow-rising with a late peak, flat plateaus, and rapid decays since first measurement. The fast-rising optical afterglows display correlations among peak flux, peak epoch, and post-peak power-law decay index that can be explained with a structured ...

Rapid fading of optical afterglows as evidence for beaming in gamma-ray bursts

Based on the refined dynamical model proposed by us earlier for beamed γ-ray burst ejecta, we carry out detailed numerical procedure to study those γray bursts with rapidly fading afterglows (i.e., ∼ t). It is found that optical afterglows from GRB 970228, 980326, 980519, 990123, 990510 and 991208 can be satisfactorily fitted if the γ-ray burst ejecta are highly collimated, with a universal ini...

Two more years of GRB optical afterglows

I review the main observational achievements concerning GRB optical afterglows occurred in the past two years Their emission seems to be well interpreted in terms of the ‘fireball’ model, although a variety of behaviours are observed. Evidence for supernova-like late time ‘bumps’ in the optical light curves is growing; however, other interpretations are possible. Fast follow-up observations all...

Snapshot Identification of Gamma Ray Burst Optical Afterglows

Gamma ray burst afterglows can be identified in single epoch observations using three or more optical filters. This method relies on color measurements to distinguish the power law spectrum of an afterglow from the curved spectra of stars. Observations in a fourth filter will further distinguish between afterglows and most galaxies up to redshifts z ≈ 1. By allowing faster identification of opt...
